On November 29^th, the representatives from 8 WCI partner communities (“Local Campus”: voluntary local organizing group in the WCI partner community) and Tokyo based volunteer supporters (Social Venture Partners Tokyo, college students interns etc.) gathered in Tokyo, and shared visions and discussed the plan for the upcoming programs.

It was very exciting to see all the faces of important team members from all over Japan in one place! – with local special sweets they brought!!

Now, the local preparation for the World Campus – Japan 2010 Summer Program officially began!!!

WCI CEO, Hiro Nishimura visited one of the partner universities, the University of Gent in Belgium on December 4^th. He was welcomed by Professor dr. Andreas Niehaus of the Department of Japanese Language and Culture and discussed about the future possibilities and enhancement of the partnership.

After the meeting, he and one of the WC-J alumni, Jotter Verhaeghe (Spring ’08) met with the university students who are interested in the summer 2010 program. Many of the students showed their interests to apply for the program after his presentation. We look forward to seeing them in Japan next summer.

Also, there was a WC-J Belgian mini-reunion with the alumni from the University of Gent, Jotter Verhaeghe, Marlies Holvoet (Summer ’07) and Kim Merckaert (Summer ’07.)

World Campus International, Inc. facilitated the Cultural Emersion Program for the members of Cirque du Soleil’s “CORTEO” from October 14 thru 15. The professional performing artists spent two days in the beautiful mountain community, Uda City in Nara Prefecture, experiencing home stay, temple visits, and a session with a Japanese sward maker, etc. In these two days, the members deeply emerged into the Japanese community and culture.

World Campus International, Inc. facilitated the Cultural Bridge Program of AsiaLearn, the North American based marketing company from September 12 thru 15. The three American and one German university students, who are enrolling to the Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University in Beppu, Japan, had a smooth and fun entrée to Japan by experiencing home stay, historical site visits, and Japanese Soba making, and training on how to work with the Japanese culture, etc. In the short period of three days, the students gained their own families in Japan.

After an annual board meeting in Tokyo, a reception party was held for board members, representatives of Local Organizing Committees, road staff, and supporters of World Campus International. Philip from Germany was also invited to share his experience as a participant in the program thus far. There was a brief presentation of the current state of the program and the short term and long term outlook was also outlined. The night was a huge success as the fifty or so guests had a chance to mingle and chat about World Campus International.

Nicolina even regaled us with a wonderful rendition of “kizuna”, an original World Campus International song. A wonderful time was had by all including those suffering from enormous jetlag.

The WCJ staff works closely with the local community to coordinate program activities and events in each city. Today the staff and students from Kansai University are discussing our role in an upcoming festival and finalizing plans for a discussion with college students.
